Four Years After #EndSARS, Police Abuses Still Deh – Amnesty

Amnesty International Nigeria don talk say police abuses still dey rampant four years after #EndSARS protests. The human rights group say dem still dey receive reports of human rights violations including unlawful detention, extortion, torture, and sexual violence by the Nigeria Police.

The #EndSARS protests wey happen between October 1 and 20, 2020, na because of police brutality, especially from the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). But even though the protests end, the abuses no stop. Isa Sanusi, Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, talk say, “Amnesty International continues to receive – almost daily – reports of human rights violations by the police across Nigeria, including unlawful detention, extortion, torture, sexual violence and in some cases extrajudicial execution.”

Amnesty also mention some cases of judicial execution by the police. For example, on 3 July 2021, Jumoke Oyeleke, a 25-year-old salesgirl, die after a police officer shoot her during the Yoruba nation rally at Ojota, Lagos. Another case be Mosurat Ojuade, an 18-year-old fashion designer, who was shot and killed by a police officer on 11 September 2021.

On Sunday, while some youths gather at Lekki Toll Gate to commemorate the fourth anniversary of #EndSARS, police arrest over 18 protesters. The National Spokesperson of the Youth Rights Campaign, Hassan Soweto, and 17 others were among those arrested and taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department at Panti in Yaba, Lagos.

Amnesty International call on the Nigerian government to address these human rights violations and make sure the police no dey violate human rights again. They say the government must fulfill their promises to reform the police and bring perpetrators to justice.
