Former Green Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Fregene Don Die at 77

Former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Fregene, don die at the age of 77. The news of his death was confirmed by his close friend and ex-international, Segun Odegbami, on Sunday.

Odegbami write say Fregene die quietly in the presence of his wife, Tina, and two of his children after a prolonged illness. Fregene had been on life support for the past one week before he pass away.

Peter Fregene, popularly known as ‘Apo’ or ‘Flying Cat’, was a legendary goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Green Eagles. He represent Nigeria at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico and feature prominently in the national team during the 1960s and 70s.

His incredible reflexes and resilience between the posts earn him the nickname ‘Apo’. Fregene also win the Nigerian FA Cup with both ECN and Stationery Stores during his career.

Odegbami thank all those who rally around Fregene during his illness, saying, “On behalf of all generations of Nigerian footballers, Olympians, sports persons, his family, friends, fans, and a few incredible Nigerians that quietly rallied round and, with their support, prayers and the will of the creator of the Universe, kept him alive until this night, I say a big ‘thank you’.”
