FIRS De Ask Judiciary Help For Tax System

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) don call on the judiciary to help dem make sure say the tax system for Nigeria dey work well. Dis call come from the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, no, but from the CJN, Justice Kekere-Ekun, during the opening ceremony of the High Impact Interactive Conference with Justices and Judges, wey FIRS organize in partnership with the National Judicial Institute (NJI).

Justice Kekere-Ekun tell FIRS say dem should focus on transforming the existing structures before dem start to implement new technological innovations. She say dis conference important for building capacity and understanding sector-specific issues like taxation, but it no replace the duty of the relevant agencies to perform their responsibilities diligently.

The Executive Chairman of FIRS, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, wey Muhammad Lawal Abubakar represent, talk say for their tax system to be effective, dem need the unwavering support and integrity of the judiciary. He say the judiciary serve as the guardian of justice and fairness in society, and their role in interpreting tax laws, adjudicating disputes, and ensuring compliance is critical.

Abubakar also mention say the conference aim to leverage the role of the judiciary in the Nigerian tax system and prepare dem for new laws wey go come into effect from January 2025. He express confidence say FIRS go meet their target of N19.4 trillion dis year and maybe increase the target for 2025.
