Nigeria‘s Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to embracing renewable energy and sustainable practices, particularly in the maritime sector. At the 2024 World Maritime Day Parallel Event in Barcelona, Spain, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized the country’s dedication to the International Maritime Organization‘s (IMO) decarbonization strategy.
Oyetola stated that the future of shipping lies in green energy and sustainable practices, and Nigeria is fully aligned with these goals. He highlighted the country’s readiness to support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in shipping, in line with IMO’s global environmental objectives.
The Minister also underscored Nigeria’s role as a responsible maritime nation, expressing the country’s willingness to collaborate with other member states to foster a safe, secure, and sustainable future for the global maritime community. Nigeria is seeking Category “C” membership on the IMO Council to further influence international maritime policies.
In addition to maritime security initiatives like the Deep Blue Project, which aims to combat piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria is also committed to environmental protection. The country is adopting measures to reduce marine pollution from ships and promote sustainability within the maritime sector, aligning with the IMO’s mandates under the MARPOL Convention.
This commitment to renewable energy and sustainability is part of a broader national strategy to align Nigeria’s maritime policies with international standards and to ensure a sustainable future for the country’s maritime sector.
