On Friday, October 18, 2024, families, friends, and the East Legon community gathered for a solemn vigil to honour the memories of Justine Agbenu and Maame Dwomoh, two young girls who tragically lost their lives in a car accident on October 12.
The girls, both 12-year-old students at Cornerstone International Academy, were remembered in an emotional ceremony held at the site of the accident. The vigil featured prayers, heartfelt tributes, and moments of silent reflection. Mourners held candles and flowers, and photo frames of the girls were displayed, bringing tears to the eyes of many.
The tragic accident occurred when 16-year-old Elrad Salifu Amoako, son of Bishop Salifu Amoako, lost control of a Jaguar SUV (GN 7801-20) and collided with a 4×4 Acura vehicle (GR 2542-23) driven by Joseph Ackah. The collision caused both vehicles to catch fire, resulting in the occupants of the Acura being burned beyond recognition.
The vigil climaxed with an emotional flower-laying session, and over a dozen balloons were released into the sky in honour of the two girls. Maame Dwomoh Boaten was laid to rest in a private burial on Saturday, October 19, attended by close family and friends.
Bishop Salifu Amoako, his wife Mouha Amoako, and Linda Bempah were arrested and charged with permitting an unlicensed person to drive. They were granted bail of ¢50,000 each by the High Court in Accra. Bishop Salifu Amoako has since issued a heartfelt apology to the families of the victims, begging for forgiveness and expressing deep remorse for the tragic event.
