Delta State government don dey take serious steps to tackle human trafficking for the state. According to the Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, dem dey work hard to reduce human trafficking activities to the barest minimum or even eliminate am totally.
Ohwovoriole make this statement when the Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for Edo State, Aganran Alao, visit am on Saturday in Asaba, the Delta State capital. He say the law to tackle human trafficking dey at the final stage at the State House of Assembly, and dem don carry out public hearing on the law already.
The law dey designed to make life hard for human traffickers. Part of the recommendations of the law include using the properties of offenders to benefit the victims. Ohwovoriole describe the reports from NAPTIP as worrisome, especially since Delta State don overtake Edo State as the number one state with the highest cases of human trafficking.
Alao explain say NAPTIP na federal government agency created in 2003 by an Act of the National Assembly to fight human trafficking. He list other functions of the agency, including fighting against extortion, online crime, and scamming. Alao emphasize say the agency get the power to arrest and prosecute offenders, confiscate their assets, and cease their properties. He also say the agency dey rescue, rehabilitate, and integrate survivors of human trafficking back into society.
Alao appeal to the Ministry of Justice to assist NAPTIP with office accommodation in Asaba to help dem do their work better.
