According to the Courier and Logistics Management Institute (CLMI), the courier and logistics sub-sector in Nigeria has the potential to boost the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by a staggering 60%. This revelation was made by Distinguished Professor Simon Emeje, the executive chairman of CLMI, during a recent press conference.
Professor Emeje emphasized that the industry, which boasts assets valued at over ₦15 trillion, is yet to be fully tapped due to the lack of effective regulations and innovation. He highlighted the critical role the logistics sector plays in facilitating the movement of goods and services, improving supply chain efficiency, reducing costs, and increasing competitiveness.
The logistics sector is a significant employer in the economy, providing jobs for millions of people, including truck drivers, warehouse workers, supply chain managers, and freight forwarders. Emeje stressed that well-developed logistics infrastructure such as ports, airports, and customs procedures are essential for enabling global trade and economic integration.
CLMI is set to host an international conference and investiture on November 14, 2024, in Lagos, themed “Unlocking Economic Potentials and Fostering Nation-Building through Logistics Instruments.” The event will feature His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the distinguished special guest of honour.
The conference aims to address the regulatory and innovative gaps in the sector and to assist the government in developing policies that can drive growth and investments in the logistics and courier industry.
