Chevron Nigeria Limited, in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, has made a significant oil discovery in the Niger Delta region. The new oil field, located in the Petroleum Mining Lease (PML) 49 within the shallow offshore area of the Western Niger Delta, is estimated to produce 17,000 barrels of oil per day.
The discovery was made through the successful drilling of the Meji NW-1 well, which was spud on September 2, 2024, and reached a total depth of 8,983 feet by September 13. The well encountered approximately 690 feet of hydrocarbons within Miocene sands, appraising an extension of the already productive Meji field. The well operations were concluded on October 2, and the drilling rig has since left the location.
This new discovery is seen as a boost to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, highlighting the continued potential of the country’s offshore resources. Chevron’s General Manager, Policy Government and Public Affairs, Olusoga Oduselu, emphasized that this accomplishment aligns with Chevron’s broader global exploration goals, which include finding new resources to extend the life of producing assets and deliver production with shorter development cycle times.
The NNPC-CNL Joint Venture has expressed its commitment to working with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to ensure the continued development of the country’s oil and gas resources. This collaboration is expected to support the growth of the Nigerian oil and gas industry and the broader economy.
