Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) don dey mobilise their members to embark on strike as the 15-day ultimatum wey dem give Federal Government to meet their demands dey expire today, October 23.
The union had give the government ultimatum to address the new scheme of service for polytechnic lecturers across the country, but till now, nothing don happen.
ASUP Zone D Coordinator, Dr Iloma Richard, talk to News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt say the government no address the contentious issues in the new guidelines. He say the strike was suspended on July 22 after Federal Government intervene, but since then, no progress don be made.
Dr Richard also talk about how the government and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) no take the welfare needs of the union’s members serious. He warn say if dem no take action, it go lead to the collapse of technical and vocational education in the country.
Polytechnic lecturers in Zone D, which include South-South and South-East states, go withdraw their services once ASUP’s National Executive Council (NEC) give the directive. The union dey demand things like the release of stakeholders-validated Condition of Service for polytechnics, implementation of salary review, and release of arrears for federal polytechnics.
