Senate President Godswill Akpabio don dey defend his colleague, Senator Oyelola Ashiru, against allegations of drug trafficking wey the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) level against am.
Akpabio demand say NDLEA must bring concrete evidence to support their claims. Dis come after Ashiru raise a motion under Order 42 of the Senate Rules to clear his name and explain the situation.
Ashiru tell the Senate say the NDLEA accusations be baseless and unfounded, and that the agency’s actions be retaliatory. He claim say the NDLEA react like dis because of his contribution to a proposed bill on establishing an institute for drug awareness and rehabilitation.
According to Ashiru, he never involve in drug trafficking or consumption, and he challenge the NDLEA to prosecute anyone found guilty of drug-related offenses. His Special Assistant, Olaitan Adeyanju, also release a statement saying the NDLEA should take legal action if they have evidence.
The Senate set up an ad hoc committee, headed by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, to investigate the allegations and report back within one week. The committee likely go engage with senior officials from the NDLEA during their investigation.
