Telcos, Subscribers Reject 5% Excise Duty on Telecoms

Nigerian telcos and subscribers dey strongly oppose the new 5% excise duty wey the National Assembly propose for telecommunications services. Dis new tax go also affect gaming, betting, and lottery activities.

According to reports, the National Assembly say dem want to introduce dis 5% excise duty to increase government revenue, but many people believe say dis tax go increase the financial burden on Nigerians who already dey face economic hardship.

Subscribers and telcos argue say dis new tax go lead to higher costs for consumers and possibly reduce the use of telecom services, especially among low-income households. Dem also claim say it go hinder the growth of the telecom sector which dey contribute significantly to Nigeria’s GDP.

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and consumer groups also join the chorus, condemning the proposed tax. Dem say the government should focus on addressing the root causes of economic hardship rather than imposing more taxes on essential services.
