Petrol marketers don import about 123.4 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, to improve fuel supply for Nigeria. This importation happen between Friday, October 18, and Sunday, October 20, according to document from Nigerian Port Authority.
The petrol arrive at two seaports: Apapa port in Lagos and Calabar port in Cross River State. Four vessels carry the fuel, with the first shipment of 35,000 metric tonnes berthing at Apapa port on Friday, October 18. Other vessels follow, including one at Calabar port on Sunday.
The total import is about 92,000 metric tonnes, which translate to 123.4 million litres using the conversion rate of 1,341 litres per metric tonne. This move dey supplement the supply from Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which marketers say no dey meet domestic demand.
Marketers claim say Dangote Refinery dey produce only about 10 million litres of petrol daily, instead of the 25 million litres dem promise. In September, marketers also import about 141 million litres of PMS due to hike in pump prices and full deregulation of downstream oil sector by government.
George Ene-Ita, spokesperson for Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, say marketers with approved import licenses free to import PMS, but dem must follow testing protocols to ensure product meet stipulated standards.
