Nigeria federal government dey consider to hand over the national grid to independent operators, according to recent reports. Dis move come as part of efforts to improve the efficiency and reliability of the power sector in the country.
The national grid, which has been plagued by frequent collapses, has been a major challenge for Nigeria’s power supply. The government believe that by handing over the grid to private operators, they can bring in more expertise and investment to stabilize the system.
This development follows several incidents of grid collapse, which have left many parts of the country without power. For instance, just recently, parts of Lagos and Ibadan experienced power outages due to grid failures.
Experts say that private operators might be better equipped to manage and maintain the grid, reducing the frequency of these collapses. However, there are also concerns about the regulatory framework and how the transition will be managed to ensure that the public interest is protected.
The plan is part of a broader strategy to reform the power sector and make it more attractive to investors. With the petrol subsidy now history, the government is also promoting other alternatives like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.
