Gunmen Kill Two Mozambique Opposition Figures Ahead of Election Protests

Gunmen don kill two prominent opposition figures for Mozambique, and dis one dey happen just before protests against de disputed election results. Elvino Dias, wey be lawyer and advisor to opposition presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, and Paulo Guambe, wey be senior official and spokesperson for de new opposition party PODEMOS, na dem dey inside de car when gunmen attack dem.

De incident happen late Friday night for Bairro Da Coop area of Maputo, de capital city of Mozambique. Gunmen in two vehicles chase down de car of Dias and Guambe and fire multiple rounds, killing dem instantly. Adriano Nuvunga, director of de Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) in Mozambique, describe de killings as “cold-blooded murder” and say around 10 to 15 bullets were fired.

PODEMOS and other opposition groups dey reject de preliminary election results wey show Frelimo, de ruling party wey don rule Mozambique for over 50 years, leading in all 11 provinces. Dem accuse Frelimo of electoral malpractice, including vote buying, coercion, and inflated voter registries. Western observers also raise concerns about de legitimacy of de election process.

De opposition groups call for nationwide strike on Monday to protest against de election results. Final results are expected to be announced on October 24, but many fear dat de protest could turn violent, especially since Mozambique’s security forces have fired on protesters in de past.
