Nigerian community for di United Kingdom dey celebrate one of their own, Abigail Katung, wey be di Lord Mayor of Leeds, during di Black History Month. Dis celebration happen because of her big contributions to Nigerians living in di UK.
According to di community, Katung be strong advocate for di Nigerian community and she help create opportunities and platforms for greater visibility and engagement. Dem praise her for her dedication to public service, fostering inclusivity, and enhancing di well-being of all residents in Leeds.
Katung become di 130th Lord Mayor of Leeds City in England in May 2024, and she be di first person of African descent to hold dis position. Her appointment make her a beacon of hope and representation for Nigerians and di broader African diaspora in leadership roles.
Besides Katung, di community also recognize other Nigerians in di UK for their efforts. Dem include Toyyib Adelodun, Bukola Olubuse, Ibironke Quadri, Ndukwe Onuoha, among odas. Black History Month be an annual remembrance month which began in di United States. In di US, it be known as di African-American History Month and was formerly known as Negro History Month before 1976. It started as a way of remembering important people and events in di history of di African diaspora, initially lasting a week before becoming a month-long observation since 1970. However, while it be observed in February in di US and Canada, it be celebrated in Ireland and di UK where it be observed in October.
