My people, e be like say wahala don dey brew for our democratic process as civil society organisations don come together yan their mind about wetin go happen for 2027 general election.
The coalition wey include sharp-sharp organisations like Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), The Kukah Centre, and Yiaga Africa, don call on National Assembly to take serious matter. Dem dey beg make dem gree for House of Representatives’ decision wey go make electronic transmission of election results mandatory, allow downloadable voter cards and keep the current electoral timelines intact.
Dem gather for Abuja on Monday, and na Jake Epelle, one rights advocate, read the statement on behalf of the coalition. Dem dey warn say if National Assembly no follow the House decision, e fit scatter everything for the 2027 elections. Wetin we go dey use? Naijans go need clear results wey we fit see as e dey happen real-time. No be say we go dey wait until after e don happen before we go fit see wetin transpire.
As this matter dey hot, the group don express worry about the difference between the Senate and Representatives. Dem dey fear say this wahala fit make people lose confidence in the process. “Electoral reform no be joke. E dey important for our democracy,” na wetin dem talk.
Dem leave no stone unturned as dem nag INEC to quickly release notice and timetable for the elections. According to Wetin The Electoral Act 2022 talk, INEC suppose let everybody sabi about the elections 360 days before the polling. So, if the elections go hold on February 20, 2027, dem suppose don issue notice by February 24, 2026. Time no dey wait for anybody, my people.
They also shout say those wey dey house go need to make am easy for everybody to participate by allowing downloadable PVCs for people wey fit lose their cards or never collect am before. If over 6 million registered voters fit miss their PVCs, wetin that one mean? Na total disenfranchisement o! E mean say person go dey miss out for wetin fit decide the future of this country!
Furthermore, the coalition talk say dem no gree for any timeline wey no make sense. They wan maintain 360 days to give political parties do their homework to submit list of candidates. Make e no be wahala for everybody when e time to show faces come.
But wetin we dey hear for Section 65 dey vex dem. E say only INEC officials fit file reports if election results go need review. Na wetin dem call unfair! Wetin we go do? Dem dey ask make political parties, candidates and observers too get their voice in the matter.
As if say that no be everything. Na big call to action don enter as dem urge the members of the committee to move fast and transmit the final bill to the President within two weeks. Citizens too must stand up and demand accountability! This na our democracy as everybody get right to make sure say e work for we!
