Na Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), wey drop the gist during him palava for ‘The Conversation’ wey dey air for LTV.

My people, wetin be waste matter? From wetin Dr. Gbadegesin talk, e clear say dis initiative no be small thing. Dem wan take the rubbish wey dey our hand and turn am to money! This plan dey follow international best practices, so no be play.

Dem dey work on top the state laws to make sure say everybody go dey sort wetin dem dey throway right from house. E mean say we no go dey see waste as wahala again, but rather as valuable resource wey fit put money for pocket.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu dey push dis agenda make we for fit turn waste to wealth. Dem wan take this plan fix the reliance on landfills and make dem dey recover and recycle wetin we dey throw away. Lagos dey generate over 13,000 tons of waste every day. Abeg, think am!

As part of this new plan, dem dey also look for ways to help Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators get better trucks and supply for waste collection. This one no be small matter, because without strong support, di collection go dey suffer.

But no be only that o, dem don warn those PSP operators wey dey do am anyhow. 22 of dem dey face serious wahala after dem don receive multiple warnings. Last year, e reach 27 wey dem sack. So, if dem no fit do the job, dem go carry dem bag go.

Dr. Gbadegesin talk am clear: success for this sorting matter no dey depend only on government; e go need all of us to make am work. Lagosians need to change and embrace this sorting wahala for our own good.
