Di event take place on Thursday, and na big men and plenty experts show face as dem wan kickstart dis initiative. Dr Babatunde Ajayi wey be General Manager of LASEPA, talk say dis programme na to position Lagos as beta player for di world biofuel market, while e go still clear wahala wey dey come from how people dey dispose used oil anyhow.
According to Ajayi, used cooking oil dey cause many health wahala. If person dey reheat oil too much, e go turn harmful to our body. Plus, when dem dey pour used oil for drain, e dey mix with plastics and e go block drainage wey fit cause flooding for Lagos wey na wahala on top road and everywhere!
Na so dem don dey gather used oil for two years now, but dis one na new level. Now, people fit bring dia used cooking oil go any LASEPA office and cash out small reward. Dis one no go affect anybody—we dey talk household level here. Na chance to make money from wetin dem dey see as waste before.
Dis initiative no go only help reduce di cost wey government dey use repair road, e go help fight dem sickness wey dey come from pollution too. Ajayi clear say Lagos gats comot for drain wahala, and used oil suppose dey do work for di biofuel market instead!
The plan no dey forced. Na voluntary compliance dem dey talk. If you fit make money from your waste, you go do am gladly! Ajayi dey target make Nigeria become di third largest supplier of used cooking oil for di world behind China and India. Imagine say we fit make money of $20 million from dis initiative?
Mrs Dayo Adebayo, wey dey run Environmental Sustainability for LASEPA, talk say dis one na grassroots move wey go touch everybody. E go reach all areas regardless of gender or money level. Dis na circular eco-friendly system wey fit turn used vegetable oil into cash!
Mr Ayo Banjo, wey be Managing Director for Ororo Waste Management, talk say dis initiative dey join together environmental care, public health and money wey fit improve our lives. E come add say overusing cooking oil dey increase risk of cancer, and if we dey throw am away anyhow, e dey destroy drainage. Dis one na bad news for our health and environment.
Di programa go target people for house, wey dey generate about 50 to 60 percent of di used oil. Na so dem go set up ecosystem wey go make house owners dey earn small cash, and we go train youths to become small business owners as well.
Mrs Ayodele Oso wey dey manage air quality for LASEPA talk say dis programme no go only help reduce emissions, e go make our environment fresh and help public health too. E encourage everybody to join di scheme because e dey align with Lagos vision for better environment.
Di governor dey plan make youths dey play major role as dem go carry di matter go community level to spread di good news. Dis na beta way to turn our waste into wealth!
