Abeg, gather here! Wetin dey happen for Abuja no be small matter oh! Federal Government don drop N152 billion to contractors wey verify their projects, but no be all contractor dey happy as dem still dey protest for street.
So, the Ministry of Finance yarn say dem don pay this money to help ease some wahala wey don dey over unpaid contract fees. Dem talk say na after plenty verification and checks wey go protect taxpayer money make dem fit disburse this cash. But e no be like say contractors dey feel the message well well.
Dis gist come as contractors wey form group under All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria don waka enter road, blocking the entrance of Ministry of Finance. You fit imagine as Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Minister of State for Finance, try enter, but security people scatter the crowd as dem fire shot for air. Na only panic nor injury wey happen, but the protest don still dey push.
Dem dey shout say government dey owe dem over N4 trillion for contracts wey dem don finish since last year. Jackson Nwosu, wey na the president of the contractors’ association yarn say the government don fail to follow through with promises to pay them, and e don dey hot for dem pocket.
Though government don talk say progress dey happen, contractors dey argue say na only about 30% to 40% of wetin dem suppose collect don enter their account. E dey clear say many of dem don borrow money to do the jobs and now dem dey face serious wahala as e go bad for loan payments and interest. Na real struggle for them!
Ministry of Finance still dey call for dialogue, but contractors dey vex because person wey suppose calm them down don dey meet security for road. Dem dey shout say this protest na peaceful one, and all wetin dem just wan na their hard-earned money. Fredrick Agada, vice president of the contractors association, talk say dem no dey harm anybody.
The matter don reach top level for government as President Tinubu sef don set up committee wey involve several ministers to handle di contractors’ issues wey dey linger. No be joke, lawmakers don dey ask finance minister, Wale Edun, to explain wetin dey happen. Di federal government don even budget N1.7 trillion to settle contractor debts for 2026.
Despite all these promises, contractors don talk say dem go continue to dey protest until all their verified claims don clear. Dem dey vex say foreign contractors dey collect their payments sharp-sharp without wahala while dem dey suffer.
So, make we keep an eye on this matter as e dey unfold. E go dey interesting to see how government go fit balance di matter with these contractors wey no wan back down!
