Ow, my people! Make we talk about how Naija gas market dey shake. E be like say we dey see progress, but price of cooking gas no dey make sense at all.
According to the Federal Government, our national Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumption reach 52,800 metric tonnes for 2025, with local producers supplying 45,800 metric tonnes. This one mean say people dey produce gas for inside Naija wella!
But, no be say everything dey okay. Imported gas still dey show face, with just 7,100 metric tonnes. Na only 13% of the total supply, but e dey pain our belly say price still dey high. How come our local gas no fit reflect for our pockets? Just look how price of 12.5kg cylinder jump from N17,432 for January to N20,609 for July. Na madness! Come see November dey carry our budget go street as e cross N2,000 per kilogram. Agbako wahala!
Naija don dey produce more LPG, thanks to big investment for local gas processing plants like NLNG and Dangote Petrochemical Refinery. And dem dey operate at full capacity, so wetin dey happen?
High transport costs, poor storage systems, and issues with distribution dey make market no balance. Even with our local producers supplying well, retailers still dey chop our money with high prices.
From January to December, we fit see say domestic supply dey hold ground well, consistently providing between 66% and 100% of total monthly supply.
But daily consumption still dey fight back at only 4,380 metric tonnes. Average price for December still dey range from N1,120 to N1,600 per kilogram. Wetin be the problem? Na disconnect between how much we dey produce and how much people fit buy.
Omo, experts don talk say if we continue to focus on exports at the expense of internal consumption, Nigeria go suffer in the long run. Professor Wumi Iledare don issue warning say we must balance our gas goals. If gas development no dey also support local industries and power situations, na wetin we gain?
Na so e be, my brothers and sisters. We gats hold our leaders responsible! Make them balance the gas equation for our own sake.
