Naija wey we dey talk about power matter this time, and e no sweet at all!
According to report wey just land from Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), five electricity distribution companies (DisCos) dey lose money like say dem no sabi how to bill. DisCos wey dey suffer be Benin, Kaduna, Ibadan, Yola, and Port Harcourt. Them dey deliver power to areas wey no dey viable, and na so dem go chop N147.92 billion loss for Q3 2025 alone!
The report talk say, under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), power suppose dey shared evenly across different customer levels, but they no do am well. Na so billing efficiency and energy accounting efficiency dey misbehave. Dem suppose maintain balance, but these DisCos no fit do am.
Make we break am down small: billing efficiency na how much power dem fit bill for wetin dem distribute. If DisCo dey lose any value and e exceed +2pp or -2pp, it means dem no dey do the right thing. Na only Jos DisCo carry correct sense for dis matter, as e get variance of +1.71pp.
Others like Ikeja, Abuja, Eko, Enugu, and Kano DisCos dey shine for dis matter with correct positive variances, but the ones wey dey suffer no fit shine at all. For instance, Benin DisCo na the worst, as e dey show -26.18pp variance! E be like say dem no dey collect bill for wetin dem distribute at all!
No be say everywhere dey bad, o! Eko DisCo dey carry correct performance wey show 99.18% billing efficiency, but the rest dey lag behind. Na so na, as dem dey run for one side, others dey face big challenges and still dey find solutions.
NERC don warn say if Dem no fix their metering wahala, and no dey protect their revenue, this power sector no go fit get better. E go still depend on government intervention, and we all sabi say that one no too help for long run.
So, as Naija dey hustle to find light, na the DisCos wey go need the better strategy wey go make their accounting sharp, and meter plenty.
