My people, make I drop this gbege wey dey happen for our oil sector.
Portharcourt Refining Company wey suppose dey produce fuel don shut down since May 24, 2025, but e still dey supply 349,000 litres of diesel per day. How e take happen? Na the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) confirm am for their latest report.
The refinery don enter maintenance mode for seven months now and nobody sabi when dem go resume work. You fit imagine say the last time wey dem come out clear date for when dem go stop maintenance, the former Chief Corporate Communications Officer for NNPC, Olufemi Soneye, talk say na just one month. Now, here we dey, more than half the year don pass!
This same refinery wey dem fix last year but comeback again na now wey wahala full ground. Dem talk say e dey function once upon a time before all this wahala start, with plenty capacity for diesel, petrol, and kerosene – at least 1.5 million litres of diesel daily! But now, our hopes don dey crash like old car for city road.
No be only Portharcourt refinery wey dey go down, the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company sef don shut down less than one month after dem open am. Na wah! Our new NNPC CEO, Bayo Ojulari, don talk say we dey lose like $500 million every month! If this na true, e mean say our oil system dey total disarray.
Some people don dey shout say make dem privatise the refineries, because government no fit manage am well. The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria dey call on Federal Government make dem do am fast-fast. Dem believe say if private investors come inside, e go help reduce the wahala wey government dey face.
But Ojulari no gree hear word for that one. E don promise say dem go fix Portharcourt and make e dey produce at international standard. As e dey talk am so, na so ebi dey show say dem dey do technical overhaul, and dem get plans to make everything beta.
Now, make we shine our eye for the gas matter. For November 2025, gas production don rise! NMDPRA don report say dem dey produce 4.684 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day, up from 3.94 bscf per day in October. Na the Nigeria LNG wey dey run Trains 1–6 wey help boost e. This one go fit help solve small gas matter for power supply.
But as gas dey increase, petrol import too don rise to 52.1 million litres per day even though local consumption drop. Why? Na because our local refineries no fit meet demand and the holiday season dey come. NNPC don waka plenty cargo to balance the supply front.
Kai! Lagos still dey enjoy lowest petrol price of N910 per litre, while Maiduguri dey collect N982.50 per litre. You see say wahala no dey finish for petrol matter! And government dey think of putting tariff on petrol imports, which stakeholders don dey raise eyebrow because dem believe say e fit increase price for everybody.
So my people, as we dey look this oil and gas matter, make we dey sight am with ginger. Wetin go happen next for Portharcourt wey story never finish? Time go tell, but we dey keep our ears on ground!
