No fewer than 19 persons don die on Monday night when one speeding vehicle crash at one checkpoint for Plateau State. The incident happen for Hawan Kibo community in Riyom Local Government Area of the state.
The vehicle dey go from Adamawa State to Abuja when the accident happen. Christopher Maju, one resident of the community who witness the accident, explain how it happen to PUNCH Metro.
He say, “Na night time. Many vehicles already dey at the checkpoint after soldiers stop them for check before dem allow dem pass. Suddenly, we see one bus dey speed to the checkpoint and the people inside dey shout, ‘No brake, no brake!’ Maybe the driver try to dodge crashing on the long queue of vehicles at the checkpoint, but the bus swerve off the road and crash on one stationary articulated vehicle, killing 18 people on the spot. One injured person who still dey breathe at the scene die while dem dey take am to hospital.”
Peter Yakubu, the spokesman for the Federal Roads Safety Corps, Plateau State Command, also confirm the death of the victims. He say their corpses don dey evacuated to the hospital morgue. Yakubu blame the accident on brake failure, saying, ‘‘No one survive the accident. The sole person taken to the hospital later succumb. Eighteen die at the scene, while one die at the hospital. The whole thing be caused by brake failure. It is rather unfortunate.”
Hawan Kibo community don experience many motor accidents because of the poor condition of the road, and citizens dey lament about the situation. Some sympathisers who speak with our correspondent call on the government to intervene by repairing the Jos-Abuja Highway to avoid further waste of human lives.
