Abuja, Nigeria – As we dey hustle for better education, WAEC don drop bombshell wey show say naija students no try this year at all! Dem say this year be di worst performance for West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) wey don happen for ten years. This result no dey sweet for mouth at all, as e reveal say only 38.32% of di nearly 2 million candidates wey sit for di exam score credits wey include English and Mathematics. Na wetin dem dey call ‘underperformance’, talk am any how you wan!
According to di oga at di WAEC National Office, Dr Amos Dangut, di new anti-malpractice measures wey dem implement na im make many students jam for this year. E make cheating too hard, and we sabi say some students no prepare well ah, na wetin lead di performance wahala wey we dey see today. Dis drop na serious tori! Last year, dem get 72.12% pass rate, but dis year, e don sharply fall reach 33.8%. E be like say we no fit catch break for education side.
Dr. Dangut talk say dem don catch more than 190 thousand candidates wey dey under investigation for malpractice. Instead of dem to use dem two left legs and gather knowledge, dem dey rely on ‘expo’ from social media and sham websites wey no go help am. E be like say students wan do miracle without reading line by line.
But e no end there oh, as we get more news for di WASSCE matter. Some results, more than 451 thousand dey under processing due to technical issues. Wetin full ground be say di new computer-based testing (CBT) na im dey bring more wahala as many students dey confuse as dem never fully digest am well. Dis year, dem still give chance to write paper-and-pen style, but what happen for di exam ground come be like movie wey no fit reach climax.
Parents and teachers no dey smile for dis news, as President of di Parents-Teachers Association of Nigeria, Haruna Danjuma, don lament say di poor performance na sign of di poor teaching wey dey happen for public schools. E talk say education no fit dey work if di environment no dey conducive. Abi how dem wan jive if di learners no fit learn?
Professor Francis Egbokhare wey don dey talk for education matter since neva see sense inside what happen. He say people dey focus on technology and forget dat teachers and infrastructure na di real backbone of education. If teachers no sabi, no matter di tech wey we dey use, no success go show face. Di situation don dey make many young naija learners dey face future wey plenty dark.
As WAEC dey prepare for full CBT by 2026, stakeholders dey call out for dem to address di wahala wey dey affect students’ performance before e go scatter. We hope say next year go bring better news so dat students fit show dia real capabilities instead of being ghost for exam.
