**Lagos, Nigeria** – T2 Mobile, wey we sabi as 9mobile before, don finally manage to change di story wey don dey follow am for nearly two years. For July 2025, dem sabi gain 290,601 new subscribers, making their total subscribers jump from 2.4 million to 2.7 million. Na first time wey dem go fit boast say dem don grow since late 2023. Chai! Na correct vibes we dey feel! (E be like say dem don finally see light after di long tunnel.)
Dis gain na big deal because di whole telecom industry for Naija don dey lose ground. Dem kpai 2.4 million customers overall for July 2025 alone. Airtel Nigeria, our favorite wahala company, lose almost all di customers wey dem get, dropping to 56.5 million from 58.9 million. Even MTN and Globacom sef no gree carry last – dem lose 106,345 and 143,701 users respectively. Na so di whole industry dey go down like say dem wan enter recession! (Abi na customer wahala we dey talk, my padi?)
T2’s glow up come just as dem adopt di new name and brand identity wey dem call T2. This rebranding come with some sweet collaboration with MTN wey fit allow T2 subscribers use MTN network everywhere for Naija. Dis connection na major step, e fit help boost their customer trust and give dem beta access to di network while dem dey build their own. (E be like magic wey dey happen for telecoms, e fit sweet pass palm wine!)
Di growth wey T2 achieve fit no reach di level of di big boys for d industry, but e still make sense. Their market share don rise from 1.4% for June to 1.6% in July. Na baby steps, but we no go lie; dem dey show signs of recovery. E go better if dem fit maintain dis momentum! (Make we dey pray for dem, no be juju work, na hard work!)
Even though T2 shine, di rest of di telecom industry dey struggle. Dem say people dey waka away from Airtel, Globacom, and MTN. Na 2.4 million subscribers wey dem kick bucket for July 2025 na di highest loss wey di industry don see since February 2025. Wetin we go call dis? Na wah o. Some industry people don talk say e no be only high tariffs wey dey cause di scatter, as data dey very important for our daily life, especially dis era wey we dey enter digital banking and everything wey comot for smartphone.
Omo, e be like say di challenge nah part of di auditing wey NCC (Nigerian Communications Commission) don start for di sector to balance dem numbers. Dis audit wey begin since July 2024 don reveal say plenty lines wey dem dey count as active no dey really dey make any money—talkless of di over 64 million inactive subscriptions wey dem clean out. Chai! Na wetin we call serious clean-up o! (E be like say dem fit withdraw even di dead phone numbers, no go be everybody get chance to carry phone again o!)
As di auditor don dey show face, dem also don tight di rules. Every number wey no show serious activity for 180 days go dey marked inactive. If di inactivity continue for another 180 days, dem fit chop di number off completely after 365 days of doing nothing. Dis wahala no go gree anybody leniency wey dem dey expect o! (Baba, if your line no dey ring for your ear, better find another one fast! No go wait make dem come chop am!)
Bottom line be say, T2 don shine small, but make we see how dem go handle di market as it dey unfold. We wan see if dem go fit pull plenty more customers with dis new swag wey dem don rock. If dem continue to catch better vibes, who know? We fit dey talk say T2 don become di next big thing wey fit challenge di telecom giants!
So, mark your calendars, my padi! Dis October, dem go host di big TechCabal Moonshot event for Lagos, where plenty tech people go gather including founders, creatives, and leaders as dem dey brainstorm di future. We no fit miss am! Early bird ticket dey 20% off, so no slack, abeg!
