As Hurricane Milton dey approach Florida, many schools for the state don dey close to ensure student and staff safety. According to the Florida Department of Education, several counties have announced school closures starting from Monday, October 7, 2024.
DeSoto County Schools, Hillsborough County Schools, Lee County Schools, Pasco County Schools, Pinellas County Schools, and Sarasota County Schools are all closed on Monday, October 7, 2024. These closures will continue into Tuesday and Wednesday for some of these counties.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has also declared a state of emergency in 51 counties, including those still recovering from previous hurricanes. This decision is due to the potential catastrophic impact of Hurricane Milton, which is expected to bring life-threatening storm surge and severe wind gusts.
