Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, don dey show him commitment to education as him award scholarship to 100 students of Wigwe University, Isiokpo, inside Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.
This scholarship come as the university, wey be founded by the late Dr Herbert Wigwe, former Managing Director of Access Holdings Limited, commence academic activities eight months after him death. Dr Wigwe, him wife, Chizoba, and him first son, Chizzy, die on February 9, 2024, after the helicopter dem dey travel crash near Nipton, California, in the United States of America.
Governor Fubara, who be the special guest of honour at the official opening of the university, say the state government go ensure that the vision of the late philanthropist for the institution no die. Him represent by the Commissioner for Education, Dr Ovy Chukwuma, say the government dey in partnership with Wigwe University and dey happy with the institution’s curriculum.
Dr Chukwuma add say the governor give 70 of the scholarships to Rivers State indigenes and 30 per cent to non-indigenes wey dey reside in Rivers State for inclusiveness. The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Marwan Al-Akaidi, say the university dey founded on the principles set forth by the late Dr Herbert Wigwe, whose legacy inspire dem to unite Africa’s potential for prosperity and nurture thoughtful and fearless leaders.
