The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives has assured that the members of the House will continue to support the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. This assurance came during a public hearing organised by the House Committee on Healthy Specialty Care and Services on Thursday.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, during the hearing, emphasized the importance of effective oversight of health institutions to ensure they serve the Nigerian public satisfactorily. He highlighted the need for strengthening healthcare delivery in Nigeria, particularly in specialised institutions.
The public hearing was focused on a bill to amend the Orthopaedic Hospitals Management Board to establish an Orthopaedic Hospital in Billiri, Gombe State. Abbas noted that this bill is crucial for addressing the orthopaedic healthcare gap in the Northeast region of Nigeria.
The Chairman of the Committee, Alex Ogbona, represented by the Deputy Chairman, Shetima Ali, explained that the proposed hospital will be under the control of the Orthopaedic Hospitals Management Board and affiliated with the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe. This will provide specialised orthopaedic treatment and medical services.
The Gombe State Commissioner for Health, Dr Habu Dahiru, also spoke at the event, highlighting the need for the hospital due to the high population growth and the influx of people from neighbouring states affected by insurgency in the North East sub-region.
