Members of the House of Representatives don dey lament say the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities (Prohibition) Act no dey implemented as dem suppose. The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Julius Ihonvbere, talk say the non-implementation of the act dey very disturbing and dem need to take action immediately.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Disability Matters, Hon. Bashiru Dawodu, also express deep concern over the persistent failure of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to comply with the Disability Rights Act. Dawodu say that despite the passage of the act in 2018, many public buildings and facilities still no dey accessible to persons with disabilities.
A recent incident where Sen. Gbenga Daniel’s son, Adebola, was denied access to a KFC outlet in Lagos because of wheelchair restrictions, spark public outcry and renew calls for improved accessibility. The House Committee on Disability Matters dey scrutinize the approval processes of public building plans to ensure that dem comply with the act.
The House of Representatives also raise motion to investigate the accessibility of public buildings for persons with disabilities. This motion aim to address the structural barriers that persons with disabilities face in accessing essential services and public spaces.
