Pistons Go Small! Kings Dominate for 127-117 Win for Playoff Push

DETROIT, MI — The Sacramento Kings faced the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena on April 7, 2025, in a crucial NBA matchup that could impact playoff positioning. The Kings defeated the Pistons 127-117, bolstered by a strong performance from Zach LaVine, who scored 43 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter.

The victory marked Sacramento’s third consecutive win, allowing them to solidify their hold on the ninth seed in the Western Conference, just one game ahead of the Dallas Mavericks. Meanwhile, the Pistons, who dropped four of their last five games, remained sixth in the Eastern Conference, jeopardizing their playoff momentum.

Pistons had initially taken control of the game with a 29-10 run to start the second quarter, establishing a 66-48 lead. However, the Kings responded with a determined comeback, aided by DeMar DeRozan, who contributed significantly to closing the gap.

“We had to fight through adversity,” Kings Head Coach said. “The guys showed resilience and stepped up when it mattered most,” he added, highlighting the pivotal moments in the game.

The turning point came during the fourth quarter when LaVine hit three consecutive three-pointers in the opening minutes, pushing Sacramento ahead 106-104 and keeping the momentum in their favor despite the Pistons’ attempts to rally.

Pistons’ Cade Cunningham had a strong showing, finishing with 35 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds, even cutting Sacramento’s lead to just one point at 106-105 with a three-point play early in the fourth quarter. Detroit, however, couldn’t regain the lead as Sacramento maintained pressure.

The Kings shot 51.6% from the field overall, including hitting 40.7% from beyond the arc, showcasing their offensive prowess. In contrast, Detroit’s defense struggled, allowing too many open looks, particularly in the second half.

The Pistons were just four three-pointers shy of breaking their franchise record for the most made in a season but ended 13 of 39 against the Kings in this matchup.

“We definitely missed our defensive assignments,” Pistons Head Coach said after the game. “But we also showed glimpses of what we can do if we stay focused.”

With this win, the Kings prepare for a three-game homestand starting Wednesday against the Denver Nuggets. The Pistons look to bounce back as they host the New York Knicks on Thursday.
