PDP don dey face another crisis as one faction of the party don appoint Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the new acting national chairman. This decision come after dem suspend Amb. Illiya Damagum, wey be the former acting national chairman.
Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, confirm the appointment in a statement. He say the National Working Committee (NWC) approve the appointment, and it take immediate effect according to the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
The crisis start when a faction of the NWC suspend Damagum and the national secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, over alleged disloyalty to the party. Specifically, dem accuse dem of writing a letter to the Court of Appeal in a case involving 27 former Rivers State House of Assembly members who defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which allegedly violate the PDP Constitution and their oath of office.
In response, another faction of the NWC, led by Ologunagba and the national legal adviser, Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, declare Damagum and Anyanwu suspended and announce Mohammed as the new acting chairman.
The Federal High Court in Abuja also restrain the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party from removing Damagum as the acting national chairman, citing that only a national convention can elect or remove national officers according to the PDP Constitution.
The NWC call on all party members to remain focused, especially as dem prepare for the NEC meeting scheduled for Thursday, 24th October, 2024.
