Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State is facing significant challenges as the state gears up for the November 16 governorship election. Recently, Femi Akeredolu, the younger brother of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has abandoned his support for Governor Aiyedatiwa and endorsed the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, Otunba Benson Akingboye.
Akingboye, during an interactive session with journalists in Ibadan, outlined his vision to unlock Ondo State’s economic potential and increase its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to N500 billion per month. He emphasized that with the state’s abundant resources, it has no reason to lag behind economically if its leaders are committed to effective policy implementation.
Meanwhile, Governor Aiyedatiwa has called for unity and renewed commitment among All Progressives Congress (APC) members. At the third APC Stakeholders meeting in Akure, he urged party members to intensify grassroots mobilization and appointed Hon. Abiola Makinde as the Director General of the APC State Campaign Council. The official flag-off of the APC gubernatorial campaign is set for Saturday at the Ondo City Hall.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has also announced the commencement of its campaign for the governorship election, scheduled to start on Tuesday, October 15. The PDP aims to rally prominent political figures and party members to support its candidate, Agboola Ajayi, and his running mate, Festus Akingbaso.
In another development, the Ondo State Government has denied any rift with the House of Assembly over the non-appearance of the Finance Commissioner, Omowumi Isaac, regarding the 2024 budget. The PDP, however, alleged that the supplementary budget is intended to fund the APC’s election campaign, accusing the government of failing to deliver on its promises.
