Onana Drop, Fernandes Fit for Newcastle Clash

Manchester, England — Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana will not travel with the squad for their crucial Premier League match against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday. This decision follows Onana’s poor performance in a recent Europa League match, where errors led to a 2-2 draw against Lyon.

Ruben Amorim, United’s manager, confirmed that Onana is being left out of the lineup to help him regain confidence. ‘I have to protect him,’ Amorim said. ‘We must face Newcastle with our best team.’ Altay Bayindir is set to step in as the starting goalkeeper in Onana’s absence.

Onana’s performance has drawn heavy criticism, with former player Nemanja Matic labeling him ‘one of the worst keepers in United’s history.’ Following the Lyon game, Amorim acknowledged the need for on-field adjustments and cited injuries limiting United’s squad depth.

Key players missing for United include Matthijs de Ligt, Amad Diallo, Jonny Evans, Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez, and Toby Collyer. This injury list has hampered Amorim’s plans, reducing options for tactical changes. ‘The responsibility is still there to win every match,’ he added.

Bruno Fernandes has featured in 4,078 out of a possible 4,470 minutes this season, and while concerns about fatigue have been raised, Amorim insists that competitiveness remains paramount. ‘We can’t think about future games; we have to focus on winning at St James’ Park,’ he emphasized.

Victor Lindelof has been utilized off the bench lately and may replace Harry Maguire in the starting XI. Other players expected to feature include Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, with the promising Leny Yoro likely getting a chance to showcase his skills.

Mason Mount’s recent performances have sparked discussions for his inclusion in the starting lineup. If selected, he could allow Fernandes to play deeper in midfield, creating a stable partnership with Manuel Ugarte.

As for the offensive strategy, Joshua Zirkzee may lead the line after a notable bench performance against Lyon, where he scored effectively. With Alejandro Garnacho likely providing width, United hopes to exploit Newcastle’s recent inconsistencies.

In a season marked by injuries and fluctuations in performance, United’s visit to St James’ Park serves as a vital test. The Red Devils understand the importance of resilience in the Premier League, as the margin for error narrows.

Kick-off is set for 4:30 p.m. BST on Sunday, April 13, 2025, with live coverage available on Sky Sports.
