Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) don shout sharp sharp, as dem prepare to meet today to decide wetin dem go do next about the wahala wey dey for our public universities.
Benson Upah, acting Secretary-General of NLC, confirm say dem don give Federal Government one month ultimatum to settle the long-lasting crisis for universities, polytechnics and colleges of education wey dey disturb students’ peace. As the ultimatum don expire today, the stage don dey set for decision-making.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, no carry mouth small as he talk say, “The era of signing agreements, negotiations and threatening the unions, we no go gree am again.” I mean, who go fit enjoy school when lecturers dey frown face?
Upah add say, the organisation dey committed to industrial harmony. Na so dem go meet to review the situation before dem run enter another strike. “You go hear wetin we decide. No worry.” (E be like say dem go need heavy palm-wine to soothe this tension!)
Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) don also shout for Federal Government to gree solve the problem fast. Adejuwon Olatunji-Emmanuel, the Assistant Secretary-General of NANS talk say make government take action sharply to avoid total shutdown for universities. No be wetin we want, abeg!
Olatunji-Emmanuel remind us say President Bola Tinubu‘s administration don bring stability since he enter, and we no want the academic vibes wey dey flow to spoil now. “We no wan see any palaver for school; make everybody come together to resolve the wahala sharp sharp.” (As e be so, wetin you think go happen if dem no gree?
ASUU, the body wey represent universities’ lecturers, wey suspend dem two-week warning strike last month, now dey raise alarm if proper action no happen quick. Dem dey demand for payment of backlog salaries, review of old agreements and that money for university development make sense. Na serious matter!
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, don come talk say dem don dey work on the issues, but the union claim say government dey play game. E no dey sweet when dem dey gree agree wey dem no go fulfill, no be so?
So as we dey wait for wetin the NLC go decide today, one thing we sabi be say education matter no suppose dey joke with. Make we just dey watch this drama, e fit change course anytime. (Who fit miss small drama for Naija?)
