Operatives of the Lagos Police Command have arrested the owner of three dogs that allegedly attacked and killed a security guard at Pinnock Estate in the Lekki area of Lagos State. The incident occurred on Monday night when the dog owner unknowingly allowed the dogs to roam freely, leading to the fatal attack on the estate guard.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a user with the handle @itzbasito, the security guard, who is yet to be identified, was seen lying dead as the Boerboel dogs approached his lifeless body. The video sparked widespread reactions, with some Nigerians questioning whether the death was indeed caused by the dogs or if it could have been a hit-and-run incident.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and the arrest of the dog owner on his verified X handle. He stated that the dog owner is currently in police custody and that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
If found guilty, the dog owner could face charges of misdemeanour and potentially up to two years imprisonment. This incident has highlighted the importance of responsible dog ownership, with recent warnings from the police about the dangers of allowing dogs to roam unrestrained.
