Libya dey face serious crisis ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match against Nigeria‘s Super Eagles. The president of the Libyan Football Federation, Abdulhakim Alshelmani, don resign on Sunday morning due to the team’s poor performance in the qualifiers, including their 0-1 loss to the Super Eagles in Uyo last Friday.
The resignation of Alshelmani has thrown the country’s football leadership into disarray, especially with the crucial match against the Super Eagles just around the corner. Libya is currently at the bottom of their qualifying group for AFCON 2025.
In another development, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have been stranded at Abraq International Airport in Libya. The team was supposed to land in Benghazi, but their chartered aircraft was diverted to another destination more than two hours drive from Benghazi. This move is seen as an attempt by Libyan authorities to frustrate the Super Eagles ahead of the match.
This situation comes after Libyan players complained of poor treatment during their visit to Nigeria for the previous match. The match between the Super Eagles and the Mediterranean Knights of Libya is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in Benghazi).
