Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, don announce say him government go pay workers N85,000 as minimum wage. Him make dis announcement on Wednesday evening during an interview on Channels TV titled “One-On-One with Babajide Sanwo-Olu.”
Sanwo-Olu explain say dis decision follow discussions with labor unions in Lagos. According to am, de increase be based on de state’s “affordability and capacity” to support its workers, not as a competitive move against other states.
“It’s not a competition, so I’m not going to say that we’re paying more than some other people; it’s a function of affordability and a function of capacity,” de governor say.
Dis new minimum wage be higher than de N70,000 minimum wage wey President Bola Tinubu approve for Nigerian workers in July. Sanwo-Olu also hint say dem might increase de wage again to N100,000 by January 2025.
“We actually increased salaries earlier in de year and deserving so for our staff and we will continue to do that. I would like to come back to you in January to say I have been able to increase de minimum wage of Lagos to N100,000 not because I want to make anybody look bad, it is really because I want my people to have a living wage,” him add.
