LA Galaxy Lose Again, Hope to Turn Tide Against Sporting Kansas

LOS ANGELES, California (April 27, 2025) – LA Galaxy continue to struggle in the 2025 MLS Regular Season, falling 4-2 to Portland Timbers in front of 21,215 fans at Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday evening.

This match marked the 40th clash between LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers, with the all-time series now at 15 wins, 15 losses, and 10 draws for each team. In league play, the Galaxy stand with a record of 14-13-10 while their performance in the U.S. Open Cup has been less favorable, sitting at 1-2-0.

In the previous meetings this season, the Galaxy have struggled against Portland, holding a record of 0-1-1. At home, LA Galaxy has a favorable history against the Timbers, winning 10 out of 20 regular season matches.

The scoring started in the 38th minute when Portland’s David Da Costa volleyed in a cross from Antony. Just 15 minutes into the second half, Santiago Moreno scored a low shot, pushing the score to 2-0. Kevin Kelsy added to the lead in the 63rd minute, striking from the middle of the box, sending the ball off the crossbar and in.

LA Galaxy came alive shortly after, with Christian Ramirez finding the net in the 67th minute after receiving a beautiful crossover from Joseph Paintsil. Two minutes later, Marco Reus added another goal for LA, capitalizing on a pass from Christian Ramirez before shooting into the lower corner.

However, the momentum shifted back in Portland’s favor with a penalty kick from Jonathan Rodriguez in the 76th minute, pushing the final score to 4-2.

Galaxy Coach Greg Vanney spoke after the match about the team’s performance, “We have some good moments but then we create our own issues. We need to find solutions within ourselves.” He emphasized the necessity for the team to stay confident and clear in their objectives as they prepare for their next match against Sporting Kansas City on May 4.

LA Galaxy’s midfielder Marco Reus also commented on the team’s mentality: “We’re not playing with awareness. We need to be present and proactive for the full 90 minutes.”

Christian Ramirez added, “We need to throw ourselves at it from the start and stop being conservative. We need a shift in mentality.”

The Galaxy will aim to find their first win of the season against Sporting Kansas City, hoping to build on the positive moments they showed during the match against Portland.
