Nigerian football fans have expressed their disappointment and frustration following the Super Eagles’ shocking 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Monday.
Despite Nigeria having already secured their qualification for the AFCON 2025, fans were unhappy with the performance, particularly that of Bayern Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface. The match saw Samuel Chukwueze score for Nigeria in the 59th minute, but Rwanda quickly turned the game around with goals from Aimable Mutinzi in the 72nd minute and Imanishimwe Nshuti in the 75th minute.
Fans took to social media to criticize Boniface’s performance, with many questioning his contributions to the national team. Comments ranged from his lack of impact on the field to the contrast between his club and national team performances. For instance, @SpiceyMall57010 wrote, “Boniface is a very funny guy and all, but e don reach time when we go begin tell am the truth…some players are just club champions at best and nothing more.
Ogbuevi and other fans shared similar sentiments, highlighting that Boniface has not had any notable performances while playing for the Super Eagles. Daniel Karpella also pointed out that Boniface’s omission from CAF’s recent awards shortlist was indicative of his poor form in the Nigerian jersey.
Despite the loss, Nigeria finished top of Group D with 11 points, while Rwanda failed to qualify for the tournament. The Benin Republic secured the second ticket from the group on goal difference after a goalless draw against Libya.
The defeat to Rwanda also raises concerns for Nigeria ahead of their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they will face Rwanda again in a two-legged clash. The Super Eagles are currently fifth in Group C with three points, four points behind the joint leaders Rwanda, South Africa, and the Benin Republic.
