JOHESU Threatens Strike, Gives FG 15-Day Ultimatum

JOHESU, wey be Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Healthcare Professionals, don give Federal Government 15-day ultimatum to settle their pending welfare issues or dem go embark on industrial action.

The unions say dem go resume their suspended strike on October 25 if their demands no be met. Dis information dey inside memo wey dem send to Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, on October 9, 2024.

JOHESU include unions like Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals, Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutions, and Associated Institutions, and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.

The memo, signed by National Chairman of JOHESU, Kabiru Minjibir, and its National Secretary, Martin Egbanubi, highlight several unresolved issues. These issues include adjustment of Consolidated Health Salary Structure, implementation of consultant cadre for pharmacists in Federal Health Institutions, and upward review of retirement age for health workers.

Other demands include payment of arrears of CONHESS review, tax waiver on healthcare workers’ allowances, immediate payment of COVID-19 inducement hazard allowances to omitted health workers, and immediate suspension of planned establishment and activities of National Health Facility Regulatory Agency.

JOHESU also demand immediate implementation of CONHESS adjustment, immediate payment of 25 per cent CONHESS review arrears, and immediate restoration of funding to Environmental Health Regulatory Council. Dem also want reconstitution of Boards/Governing Councils of Federal Health Institutions and commencement of process to upwardly review retirement age of health workers.
