Bauchi, Nigeria — Renowned Islamic cleric, Imam Dr. Idris Abdulaziz Dutsen Tanshi, has died, as confirmed by Sheikh Muhammad Kabir Haruna late Thursday on social media. The esteemed scholar, known for his commitment to Islamic teachings across Africa, was reported to have been struggling with health issues for some time, finally seeking medical treatment abroad during Ramadan.
The deceased was a significant figure in his community and had built a reputation as both a scholar and a businessman. His funeral prayer is set to take place at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Eid Mosque in Games Village, Bauchi, as reported by the Dutsen Tanshi Majlis Bauchi.
In a statement, it was made known that Imam Idris requested certain restrictions at his funeral. Specifically, he disallowed photographs being taken, prohibited memorial gatherings at his home, and instructed attendees not to wear shoes in the cemetery.
Dr. Idris Abdulaziz earned his degree in Islamic Law from the Islamic University of Madinah and his Ph.D. in Islamic Jurisprudence in Sudan, reflecting his deep commitment to his faith and education. His teachings had sparked both admiration and controversy, leading to tensions with various groups and authorities in Bauchi State.
Aside from his scholarly contributions, the late Imam was also known for his active role in farming and business, demonstrating a multifaceted approach to his life’s work.
The former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, expressed his condolences, praying for the departed Imam’s soul to find peace in Jannatul Fiddausi.
Dr. Idris’s death follows a tumultuous period marked by legal challenges and conflicts with law enforcement. In recent years, he faced allegations of inciting public unrest and was briefly jailed for blasphemous statements made during a Ramadan sermon, which drew nationwide controversy.
Authorities had previously deemed him a wanted man due to his failure to appear in court following the allegations. Reports indicate that challenges to his teachings and conduct had strained relationships with some traditional and governmental figures in the region.
The loss of Imam Idris Dutsen Tanshi marks a significant moment not only for his followers but also for the broader Islamic community in Nigeria, as they remember his legacy and the impact of his teachings.
