How Former Journalist Kolapo Abiodun Turn to Farming After Losing Sight

Kolapo Abiodun, a former journalist and successful entrepreneur, has shared his remarkable journey of resilience and adaptation after losing his sight to glaucoma. Abiodun, who graduated from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) with a degree in English Language in 1990, began his career in a health-focused media house. His role involved interpreting complex medical information for the general public, a skill that would later benefit him in various leadership roles and business ventures.

Before his vision loss, Abiodun led a vibrant life filled with multiple responsibilities. He was the president of his residents’ association, chaired the Alimosho branch of professional printers, and held key positions in his secondary school and university alumni associations. He also ran a thriving printing press in Ikotun, known for book publishing, which was a long-held dream for this Ijebu native.

In February 2020, Abiodun’s life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with glaucoma. Despite initial management of the condition, he experienced a sudden and severe vision loss after a trip to Ilorin. Multiple surgeries and eye implants failed to restore his sight, leading to a period of deep depression and the collapse of his printing business.

The collapse of his business forced Abiodun to sell his multi-million-naira printing machines as scrap. However, this setback did not deter him. He found new purpose in mastering assistive technology and eventually decided to become a farmer. This transition, though challenging, has given him a new lease on life and a different perspective on resilience and determination.

Abiodun highlighted the significant challenges faced by visually impaired individuals in Nigeria, including the high cost of healthcare and the lack of government support. He emphasized that about three out of ten Nigerians suffer from some form of visual impairment, often due to poor access to quality healthcare. Despite these challenges, Abiodun remains optimistic, drawing strength from his Christian faith and the support of friends who have stood by him.
