Gunmen Attack Plateau Community, Kill 51 People in Early Morning Raid

Bassa, Plateau State, Nigeria — Early this morning, unidentified gunmen launched a brutal attack on the Kwall community, resulting in a tragic death toll now confirmed at 51. Wakili Tongwe, the leader of the Zike community in the Kwall district of Bassa Local Government Area, reported that the attackers invaded homes, caused numerous fatalities, and set several houses ablaze.

Tongwe described the harrowing scene as attackers shot sporadically at residents who fled in terror after the initial gunfire erupted. He revealed that, prior to the assault, he was engaged in joint patrols with security operatives from the local vigilante group. Unfortunately, the gunmen’s invasion thwarted their efforts, leading to chaos.

“We heard gunshots and tried to evacuate people,” said Tongwe. “Some of the security operatives confronted the attackers, engaging them in a gun battle. Thankfully, they managed to repel the assailants, though not without significant damage to our community.”

The aftermath of the attack left many villagers injured, with some sustaining serious gunshot wounds and currently receiving medical treatment at a local facility. “Our community is in shock, and we are calling for more security to prevent a recurrence,” Tongwe added.

As the search for the perpetrators continues, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant while they investigate the incident, which has left families mourning and calling for justice.

In a separate incident, Obiageli Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education, penned an open letter supporting Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The letter, shared on Ezekwesili’s X account on April 14, praised Akpoti-Uduaghan’s resilience and contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.

“You are a trooper whose courage inspires millions,” Ezekwesili noted, expressing her disapproval of the senator’s unjust suspension. She maintained that Akpoti-Uduaghan is entitled to a fair hearing in the Senate. “Your right to serve the people is paramount,” Ezekwesili emphasized.

Meanwhile, in Lagos, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma spoke highly of President Bola Tinubu, asserting that his leadership is essential for Nigeria’s growth. “President Tinubu is performing and exceeding expectations with his governance,” Uzodimma stated during a recent address.

He highlighted the positive impact of Tinubu’s economic reforms, citing an increase in the monthly allocation of N12 billion to Imo State, which has enabled substantial developmental projects. “We are fortunate to have a visionary leader steering our nation,” Uzodimma concluded.
