FG Order Investigation Into Jigawa Tanker Explosion Wey Kill Over 100 People

The Federal Government don order investigation into the petrol tanker explosion wey happen for Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, and claim the lives of over 100 people. The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, give the directive to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to start the investigation immediately.

The explosion happen around 11:30 PM on Tuesday when the tanker driver lose control near Khadija University. The tanker, which dey travel from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, explode after people gather to collect the spilt petrol. This action lead to many fatalities and injuries.

According to the state police spokesperson, Shi’isu Adam, the residents wey rush to collect the spilt fuel were caught in the explosion, leading to a massive inferno that kill 94 people on the spot and leave 50 others severely injured. The injured people were rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for treatment.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources express deep sorrow over the incident and extend his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected. He also urge Nigerians to avoid approaching vehicles transporting petroleum products that have been involved in accidents or mechanical failures, and call on petroleum transporters to ensure that only certified drivers who comply with safety standards are employed.

The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, AT Abdullahi, also express his condolences and call for increased public awareness regarding the dangers of petrol explosions. He appeal to the public to notify security agencies or relevant stakeholders when such accidents occur to prevent loss of life.

A mass burial for the victims was conducted on Wednesday morning, with the entire community mourning the loss. The incident serve as a stark reminder of the severe risks involved in scooping fuel from accident scenes.
