Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) don assure Nigerians say dem no get any directive to phase out Unistar meters wey dey use for various Distribution Companies (DisCos) across de country.
According to Vice Chairman of NERC, Dr Musiliu Oseni, any meter wey DisCos dey replace must be substituted with functional units to ensure no disruption to customers’ metering needs. Dis decision come as part of efforts to bridge Nigeria’s over seven million metering gap, which don dey cause problem for accurate billing and efficient electricity distribution.
Oseni explain say Unistar meters no dey upgradable and eventually go need to be phased out due to technology issues like TID rollover, which dey become outdated. However, he stress say during dis phase-out process, no customer should be placed on estimated billing, and if customers purchase meters under de MAP framework, dem must be replaced properly.
He emphasize say, “Operationally, if dem say those meters no dey upgradable, dem can decide to phase dem out. But as you remove de meter based on de rule, dem must replace dem as it’s their responsibility to replace.”
