Enugu State Internal Revenue Service don introduce a new tax policy wey dey cause stir for the state. According to the new rule, any corpse wey stay in mortuary for more than 24 hours go attract a daily tax of N40.
The tax, which is meant to be paid by the mortuary owners and not the families of the deceased, is aimed at discouraging people from keeping corpses in mortuaries for too long. If a corpse stay in the mortuary for 100 days, the mortuary owner go pay a total of N4,000 to the state.
This new policy has generated a lot of debate among the public, with some people seeing it as a way to generate revenue while others believe it is an unnecessary burden on families who are already grieving.
The Enugu State Government explained that the tax is not intended to generate huge revenue but rather to manage the mortuary services better and ensure that corpses are buried in a timely manner.
