Douala, Cameroon – Na wah! Clashes don scatter the streets of Douala, as tension dey rise ahead of presidential election results. Four people don chop death for the protests, wey happen as dem supporters of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary gather to show say dem no gree accept anything wey no jive with dem votes.
Dem small-small politicians don dey vex, as authorities talk say police stations don suffer attack. Samuel Dieudonné Diboua, the regional governor, talk say na premeditated wahala wey cause dis gbege, but supporters dey shout say dem dey fight for dem votes and for truth.
Issa Tchiroma Bakary, wey be former government minister, don insist say he win the election wey happen on October 12, despite the heavy grip of incumbent President Paul Biya on power for 43 years. The ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) don straight-up dismiss his claims, talk say no be him fit declare result anyhow.
“Four people don lose their lives,” Diboua lament as he promise say dem go investigate wetin cause all dis wahala. But how e go fit happen when e don dey clear say the whole country dey run like marathon because of the election tussle?
For Garoua, wey na Tchiroma stronghold, police no come dey play as dem fire tear gas and water cannons on protesters, who dey chant say, “We want Tchiroma, we want Tchiroma!” (Even Madonna no reach this level of crowd control). As the protesters don shut down the streets, dem carry placards wey dey call for justice, some even dey beg for international help from US President Donald Trump! Who sabi if Trump go answer dem call?
Dem say as Tchiroma don they show face, he push back against the ruling party, wey get support from the constitutional council wey dey say only dem fit declare results officially. But Tchiroma no send, him don decline to file any complaint with dem, choose instead to brand himself “the legal and legitimate president.” How confident you go fit be wey you carry such title but nobody don confirm am?
But make we no forget. As the protests dey hot like palm wine under sun, the Catholic Church don also call for peace, as dem fear say wahala fit spark again once results land. Dem bishops dey beg say make dem official results reflect wetin true electorate want.
In the end, the whole situation fit turn from small paddy paddy to serious gbola. As Cameroon dey wait for outcomes wey fit change the political landscape, wetin remain be prayer say this ongoing saga go find solution before e get out of hand. Na the youth wey dey suffer pass o, because dem no fit run any side hustle as unemployment dey burst their heads. Who go save dem now? Time go tell!
