Cameroon don bring back Vice President after 50 years as Biya dey hold power

Cameroon parliament don pass one big change for their constitution wey go bring back Vice President position after more than 50 years. The change mean say if anything happen to President Paul Biya, the Vice President go automatically take over and finish the remaining term. Before now, na Senate leader go dey serve temporary until dem hold fresh elections.

The bill pass during joint sitting of both houses of parliament, with plenty majority support am. E still dey wait for President Biya to sign am make e become law. Those wey support the change dey talk say e go make governance better by ensuring continuity and reducing confusion when power dey change hand. But opposition people say dem rush the amendment and no consult people well.

Opposition leaders don criticize the move strong strong, call am rushed and say dem no consult people properly. Some even talk say na attempt to tighten control over who go succeed Biya. Another worry be say the Vice President go be appointed by the President, no be elected. Critics dey talk say this one go weaken democracy and concentrate more power for executive hand.

Paul Biya, wey be 93 years old, don dey rule Cameroon since 1982, make am one of the longest-serving leaders for the world. Over the years, people dey always speculate about his health, but dem no dey discuss am openly for the country. The question of who go succeed am don remain one sensitive matter wey never resolve, and this new amendment don make am even more important.

Biya win eighth term for power last October with 53.7 percent of votes, but opposition say dem rig the election. The Vice President role no be entirely new for Cameroon. E exist before 1972, when Cameroon dey operate under federal system wey balance English-speaking and French-speaking regions. Dem remove the position after Cameroon change to unitary state, wey centralize power for presidency.

Now say the constitutional change don pass, attention don shift to one key question: who go dem appoint as Vice President? The decision go shape not just the immediate future of governance, but also the broader political direction of Cameroon for the post-Biya era.

For the parliament session wey dem pass the amendment, opposition party boycott am, but the bill still pass with dominating vote. Critics dey warn say this legislative change go consolidate executive power at democracy expense, and e dey echo fears of autocratic shift. Discontent dey fester, as mass protests follow Biya contested re-election show.

The amendment passage underscore emerging tensions, as citizens dey question balance of power and dey call for greater representation for leadership roles. The move dey stir constitutional debates across the nation, with opposition saying e go further strengthen Biya grip on power.
