Aaron Pierre, di actor wey dey rise fast for Hollywood, don get di role of Green Lantern John Stewart for HBO‘s upcoming series, Lanterns. Dis news come out just few days ago, and it’s got many fans excited and some others talking about a sensitive issue.
Pierre, who recently shine in Netflix‘s Rebel Ridge, go fit into di role of John Stewart well because of his military background and acting skills. He also play Dev-Em in Syfy‘s Krypton and Malcolm X in National Geographic’s Genius: MLK/X. For Lanterns, he go star alongside Kyle Chandler, who go play Green Lantern Hal Jordan.
Though many people dey happy for Pierre, some dey talk about colorism in casting. John Stewart, as a character, was created as a dark-skinned superhero by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams. But now, Pierre, who has a lighter complexion, go play di role. Dis raise questions about why dark-skinned characters often get played by lighter-skinned actors in live-action adaptations.
Pierre himself take to Instagram to express his gratitude and honor for getting di role. He write, “Tremendously honoured and abundantly grateful. A dream come true. Thank you all for the love and beautiful energy. Thank you for welcoming me to DC. Let’s work!” He also share image of di DCAU version of John Stewart.
Lanterns, which go be produced between January and June 2025 in Atlanta, go follow John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they investigate a murder in di American heartland. Di series go have eight episodes and be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe plans.
