Lagos community dey raise alarm over the increase in road accidents wey dey happen because of illegal U-turns along Iyana-Iba to Egbeda area of Lagos State. Motorists and residents for the area talk say some motorcycle and tricycle riders dey bypass the designated turning points, instead dem dey use the road median and pavements to make U-turns.
This practice don lead to multiple accidents and even fatalities. When our correspondent visit the area, dem observe say parts of the road median don be destroyed by these illegal turns. Concerned motorists call on the Lagos State Government to take immediate action to stop these illegal activities and repair the damage to the road infrastructure.
Sulaimon Okewole, a resident of Egbeda Road area, describe the practice as a traffic violation punishable by law. Okewole express worries about how motorcycle and tricycle riders, as well as some motorists, frequently damage the road by driving on the pavement, which often result in accidents. He urge authorities to punish offenders to deter others.
Lateef Ganiu, a motorist who recently have his car damaged in one of these incidents, also demand that those violating traffic rules be arrested and prosecuted. He say, “I was driving on my lane when a bike suddenly cross to use the pavement, and unfortunately, we collide, causing an accident.”
Another motorist, Tobi Qudus, echo similar concerns, pointing out that the illegal U-turns be responsible for several accidents in the area. “Unsuspecting vehicles crash into those making these illegal U-turns. Passengers often sustain serious injuries. The government needs to take action against this,” he say.
The Director of the Public Affairs Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report.
